In this edition of MAKE THIS, we show you how to use Colorhouse Chalkboard Paint to make a CHALKBOARD HEADBOARD. Learn how to add a space above the bed for your little one to get creative. In an earlier post, we showed you how to MAKE THIS: PUZZLE WALL to combine a boy + girl together in the same room. Here we add another layer of fun to this peaceful separation.
You will need the following materials for this project:
1 quart of Colorhouse Chalkboard paint – METAL .05
2 ½”sash brush for painting
3M 2080 blue painter’s tape for masking
Drop cloth to protect your floor
STEP 1: Decide where you want your chalkboard headboard to go along with the size + shape you want to create. We chose the space slightly above the beds and used irregular, abstract shapes that echoed the zigzag of the PUZZLE wall. We applied the masking tape to the wall freehand – the results are blocks of childlike creativity!
STEP 2: Seal the edge of the tape by brushing the existing wall color along the inside edge of the tape – METAL .03 on the left side of the PUZZLE WALL and CREATE .01 on the right. This makes for a PERFECT line and any paint that leaks through the masking will be the same color as the wall, so you won’t see it. Allow to dry.
STEP 3: For the headboards, we used Colorhouse Chalkboard hue METAL .05, a graphite grey with good contrast to our wall hues. Apply 2 coats with your brush inside the masked areas. Allow 2 hours to dry between coats.
STEP 4: Immediately after the 2nd coat, gently peel the tape toward the painted area to reveal your new CHALKBOARDS and unleash your little creative artist!
TIPS: Allow chalkboard paint to dry for 48 hours before using the chalkboard surface. Prior to the first use, rub the entire surface with the side of a piece of chalk and then dry erase. Your chalkboard is now ready to use. Chalk residue can be removed with a damp cloth once the paint has dried for 7 days. Repeat rubbing the entire surface with the side of a piece of chalk before using again.
